We recently held a week of prayer at Belfast Bible College and set-up our permanent prayer room a little differently and invited students at the college to intentionally spend time with God on campus
Of course, prayer should be the first thing on our agenda as Christians and even more so for those studying theology! Yet sometimes that is not the case and many of the students and staff at the college have experienced real ‘dry’ periods in their lives where God seems very far away, even in the midst of college life.

A group of us kept this in mind as we prayed and planned together, after a few days of planning and one intense day setting up, our room was fully furnished with lots of white fabric, a few comfortable chairs, art supplies and decent tunes floating out the stereo!

The room was split into three sections that all focussed on ‘Intimacy with our Father in Heaven.’ Firstly an area for honesty, in this area we encouraged ourselves and others to be honest with God, letting him know ‘where we are at.’ This included a ‘doubts, hopes and fears’ wall and meant that as we added our prayers to others we would share in one another’s brokenness. We covered the next area in verses about our inheritance in Christ and God’s unconditional love for us, this individual space meant people could sit and relax in God’s presence, understanding his desire to spend time with his people. People could then leave the room though the ‘expressions’ area that meant they could spend time painting or drawing to express their intimacy with God.

All in all the week went really well yet time will be the test as we see how God answers our prayers and ‘walks with us’ over the next weeks and months as a college

community. It is increasingly encouraging to see more people coming to morning and midday prayers and we have already planned to hold another week of prayer in the second term, our focus next time will be ‘living out of intimacy with our Father in Heaven’ as students prepare to head off on mission trips around the world.
