Leaning into the mystery of God

Throughout the Torah there’s the command to not make idols in the image of any animal, bird or human or not to bow down to the sun, moon or stars. It sounds simple right? It was common practice, however, for the tribes and nations that surrounded Israel to worship these kinds of idols, idols made in the image of something they could see, understand or make sense of. In Deuteronomy 4 Moses commands this generation to watch out for this and He begins by saying “you saw no form when the Lord spoke to you at Horeb out of the Midst of the fire”

You have not seen God, He is a mystery, so keep it that way. Do not make your God into something you can understand, do not cut him down to suit what you can make sense of. Lean into the mystery of who He is. He’s not a problem to be solved, He’s a mystery to be explored.

Enjoy the adventure of who He is. Throughout this year of prayer there is an invitation to each of us to lean into the mystery of who God is, the mystery of prayer and in doing so discover something even better than we imagined Him to be.

Take a moment now and release God from the image you may have tried to hold Him in. Find peace in the knowing that He’s so much bigger than this image.

Lord, I’ve tried to craft you in my own image, I’ve tried to make sense of you, you who I’ve never seen. I’m finished with this though, I let go of my idols, my false expectations, and I lean into who you truly are.

In the summer season, as our rhythms have slowed down – invite God into this space. Rather than approaching prayer with a list of things, why not spend some time in silence, spend some time outdoors in nature – beholding God who is all around.
